Sleep Efficiency
Sleep efficiency measures the amount of time you are sleeping while you are in bed. Just because you are in bed for 8 hours a night does not mean that you are getting 8 hours of sleep, so if that is your goal, you may need to make changes to increase the efficiency or spend a bit more time in bed.
Your sleep efficiency is 0%.
How it works
Sleep efficiency is the share of your time in bed that you spent asleep. It separates the time you set aside for sleep from the sleep you actually got.
Efficiency = (time asleep ÷ time in bed) × 100
Seven hours of sleep in eight hours in bed is (7 ÷ 8) × 100, which is 87.5 percent.
What this number is not
It is not sleep quality. Efficiency counts minutes and says nothing about how much deep or REM sleep you got, so a night of shallow, unbroken sleep scores higher than a restorative night with one trip to the bathroom.
How accurate it is
It depends entirely on when your tracker thinks you got into bed, which is the part wearables are worst at. A device that starts the clock when you stop moving will flatter you; one that starts it when you put your phone down will not.
Common questions
What counts as good sleep efficiency?
Eighty-five percent or above is the figure usually quoted for a healthy adult, and above ninety can be a sign of not spending enough time in bed rather than of sleeping well.
Does FitnessSyncer work this out for me?
Yes, for every night that arrives from a connected tracker. It appears in the built-in Sleep report and you can chart it over time on your Dashboard.
Why is my efficiency low when I slept well?
Usually because you spent a long time in bed either side of the sleep, reading or lying awake. Going to bed closer to when you fall asleep raises the number without changing anything about the sleep itself.
