Estimated Fitness Age

VO2 Max is a measure of the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during exercise, and is a strong indicator of cardiovascular fitness. Using your VO2 Max reading along with your age and sex, we can estimate your Fitness Category and your Fitness Age — the age at which an average person has a similar VO2 Max to yours.

This is a heuristic, not a clinical or standardized measurement — other sources, devices, and apps may use different norm charts or formulas and arrive at different results for the same VO2 Max. Treat it as a rough, motivational guide rather than a precise or defendable medical assessment.

Your fitness category is 0.Your estimated fitness age is 0.

How it works

VO2 Max is the most oxygen your body can use during hard exercise, measured in milliliters per kilogram of body weight per minute. Your fitness category compares it against the published norms for your sex and age band, and your fitness age is the age at which your reading would be average.

A 45-year-old man with a VO2 Max of 48 sits above the average for his age band, so his fitness age comes out younger than 45.

What this number is not

It is not a medical assessment and the fitness age is not a prediction about anything. It is a way of expressing one number in units people find easier to feel, and different norm charts give different answers for the same reading.

How accurate it is

A reading from a watch is estimated from your heart rate against your pace, so it is sensitive to how well your maximum heart rate is set and to the kind of running you do. Treat a change over months as meaningful and a change between two runs as noise.

Common questions

Where does my VO2 Max come from?

From your watch or training platform, which estimates it from your heart rate against your pace or power. A laboratory test with a mask is the real measurement, and the two can differ by several points.

Can I improve it?

Yes, and the usual answer is a mix of a lot of easy aerobic work and a small amount of hard interval work. Progress is measured in months.

Does FitnessSyncer chart this?

Yes. A VO2 Max that arrives from a connected service is charted over time, and your fitness category appears as one of the key figures on your Dashboard.
