Time in Range

Time in Range

Time in range is the percentage of the day your glucose spent between an upper and a lower target, most commonly 70 to 180 mg/dL, or 3.9 to 10.0 mmol/L. It is reported alongside time above range and time below range, and the three add up to the whole day.

It has become the preferred measure wherever continuous monitoring is available, because it describes the shape of the day rather than only its average. Someone spending the whole day steadily inside the band and someone swinging from low to high can share an average and an A1C, and their days are not comparable.

The commonly quoted target is 70 percent of the day in range, with less than 4 percent below. What matters more for most people is the direction of travel and which meals or times of day account for the excursions.

What it is not

It is only as meaningful as the range it is measured against, and the standard band is not right for everybody. It also treats all time outside the band alike, so a brief spike after a meal counts the same as a long slow drift.

Where you see it in FitnessSyncer

Set your low and high glucose values and your target percentage in your preferences, and time in range is worked out from your glucose data, charted on your Dashboard and summarized in the built-in Diabetes report. Your charts can also be shaded by that range.
