FitnessSyncer Accessibility
We want FitnessSyncer to be usable by everyone, whatever tools you browse with. This page says where we are, what you can expect to work, and what is not there yet.
How accessible is FitnessSyncer?
FitnessSyncer.com is partially conformant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA. Partially conformant means most of the site meets the standard and some parts do not yet. The parts that do not are listed below rather than left for you to discover.
Can I use FitnessSyncer without a mouse?
Yes. Everything on the site can be operated from the keyboard alone, including the parts that are usually mouse-only elsewhere:
- The toolbars across the top of the Dashboard and the Stream.
- Every pop-up panel and dialog. Escape closes one, and focus returns to the control you opened it from.
- The menus on each chart. They are one stop in the tab order, and the arrow keys move between the entries.
- Lists you can drag to reorder. Each row also has a position box you can type a number into.
- Charts themselves, including moving from one data point to the next.
If you use Safari on a Mac and the toolbar icons appear to be skipped, turn on Press Tab to highlight each item on a webpage in Safari’s Advanced preferences. Safari leaves links out of the tab order until you do.
Does FitnessSyncer work with a screen reader?
Pages are built to be read aloud. Images, buttons and icons have names, headings describe the structure of the page, and every page has a title that says which page it is.
Forms say which fields are required before you submit, and when something is wrong they say which field it was and what to do about it. Messages that appear without reloading the page, such as a save confirmation or an error, are announced rather than appearing silently.
I cannot tell the lines on a chart apart. What can I do?
Two things, and the first one works on every chart:
- Every chart has a Show the data table button next to it, which opens the chart’s own numbers as a table you can read and sort. The same numbers are available as a CSV download.
- The colors we draw charts in are chosen so that each set of numbers stands out both from the background and from the set next to it, by lightness as well as by hue.
- On line and area charts, each set of numbers also has its own dash pattern and its own point shape, so you can follow a line without relying on color at all.
Can I make the text bigger?
Yes. Text can be resized to 200 percent without losing content, the site does not prevent you from pinch-zooming on a phone or tablet, and pages reflow to fit a narrow screen rather than making you scroll sideways. If you have increased the spacing between letters, words or lines through your browser or an extension, the site is built to cope with that too.
What is not working yet?
- Our Android and iOS apps are still catching up with the website. That work is under way, and the accessibility improvements released so far need FitnessSyncer for Android 3.0.10.6 or FitnessSyncer for iOS 2.2.9.8 or later, so please update if you are on an older build. If you rely on assistive technology, the website is still the more complete experience for now.
- We have not yet had an independent accessibility audit, so what we claim on this page is our own assessment.
Something is not working for me. How do I tell you?
Please contact us and say what you were trying to do and what got in the way. It helps to know which browser you are using and whether you use a screen reader, magnification, or the keyboard alone. We read every message, and we will tell you what we can do and roughly when.
Accessibility problems are bugs, not feature requests. If something on this page says it works and it does not work for you, we want to know.
