  FitnessSyncer and ChatGPT

ChatGPT can read your health and fitness data through the FitnessSyncer MCP Server, so you can ask about your own history in plain language instead of building a report for it. Ask what your resting heart rate has done since January, whether you sleep better on the days you train, or which source stopped syncing last week, and ChatGPT answers from your data rather than from generalities.

It can record an entry for you as well, so a weigh-in or a note can be dictated in the same conversation.

Custom MCP servers are added from ChatGPT on the web. Which plans offer them has changed more than once, and in a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace your administrator decides whether you may add one at all, so some of the steps below may look different or be missing for your account.

Before you start

  • A FitnessSyncer account with your sources connected. The MCP Server is included with every account, so there is nothing extra to buy; see Getting Started if you are new. A free account reaches back over less history here, exactly as it does everywhere else on the site.
  • ChatGPT on the web, on a plan that offers custom MCP servers. The phone and desktop apps use what you add on the web, but they cannot add one.

Step 1: Create your keys on FitnessSyncer

  1. Go to the Developer Accounts page.
  2. At the bottom of the page, select OpenAI from the list and click “Create”.
  3. Note the Client Id and Client Secret. The Client Secret is only displayed this once; if you lose it, you can regenerate it, but you will then need to enter it in ChatGPT again.

Step 2: Add FitnessSyncer to ChatGPT

  1. Select Plugins on the left.
  2. Select the plus button and then “Add custom MCP server”.
  3. If ChatGPT asks you to turn on Developer mode first, turn it on and agree to the risks. It lives under Settings, then Apps, then Advanced settings.
  4. Download FitnessSyncer Icon and upload it as the icon
  5. Enter FitnessSyncer for the Name, and anything you like for the Description
  6. Under Connection, enter https://www.fitnesssyncer.com/services/mcp for the Remote MCP server URL
  7. For the Authentication, select OAuth. The remaining fields appear once you have chosen it.
  8. Enter profile_read,profile_write,source_read,source_data_read,destination_read,destination_write,notebook_write,annotation_read,annotation_write,leaderboard_participate for the Default Scopes; when authenticating, you can unselect the ones that you do not wish for the session to use.
  9. Enter https://www.fitnesssyncer.com/api/oauth/authorize for the Auth URL
  10. Enter https://www.fitnesssyncer.com/api/oauth/access_token for the Token URL
  11. Select Advanced Settings and copy-and-paste the Client ID and Client Secret that you created in Step 1. ChatGPT can also register itself through Dynamic Client Registration or a Client ID Metadata Document, and FitnessSyncer offers neither, so the Client ID and Client Secret you created are what it needs.
  12. For Token endpoint auth method, please select client_secret_post.
  13. Select Create, which older versions of this screen call Add.
  14. Click Connect near the FitnessSyncer icon, and approve the permissions FitnessSyncer asks for. Uncheck anything you do not want ChatGPT to do; for answering questions, the read permissions are enough.

OpenAI documents its own half of this under custom MCP servers, which is the place to check if these screens move again.

Try it

Start a new chat, type @ and pick FitnessSyncer, then paste any of these:

  • List all the apps and devices FitnessSyncer is currently connected to for my account and show when they last synced.
  • How did I sleep this week compared to last week?
  • What has my resting heart rate done over the last month?
  • Give me a weekly health overview based on everything FitnessSyncer knows about me, and call out anything that looks outside my normal range.

Picking FitnessSyncer with @ matters, because ChatGPT will otherwise often answer from the web instead of asking us. There are many more ideas on the MCP Server page.

ChatGPT explains your readings using public guidelines; this is not medical advice.

ChatGPT only asks me for a server URL and a header. Where do the Client ID and Client Secret go?

Nowhere. That screen is not offering you OAuth, so there is no field for them. Use an API Key instead: create an “MCP: API Key” developer account, then enter Authorization as the header name and the word Bearer, a space, and your API Key as its value. Connecting with an API Key has the steps.

I do not see Plugins, or Add custom MCP server. Why?

Custom MCP servers are not offered on every ChatGPT plan, and they are added only from ChatGPT on the web rather than from the phone or desktop apps. In a Business, Enterprise or Edu workspace, your administrator decides whether members may add one, so the option can be absent even on a plan that otherwise includes it.

If ChatGPT offers you a server URL and a header but no OAuth screen, the API Key method works instead.

Does this cost extra?

Not from us. The FitnessSyncer MCP Server is available to any account, and a free account simply reaches back over less history, as described on the FitnessSyncer Pro page. Whether your ChatGPT plan offers custom MCP servers is a question for OpenAI.

How do I disconnect ChatGPT?

Remove the custom MCP server in ChatGPT, then revoke its permissions in your profile or delete the OpenAI keys in Developer Configuration. Removing the keys stops any connection made with them, so you will need to create new keys to connect again.
