  FitnessSyncer and Home Assistant

Home Assistant can use the FitnessSyncer MCP Server through its Model Context Protocol integration. Once connected, the AI behind Assist can answer questions about your own health and fitness data, by voice or in a chat: how you slept this week, whether your resting heart rate is trending down, or when you last logged a weigh-in.

This connects Assist to FitnessSyncer so it can answer when you ask. It does not add FitnessSyncer sensors to your dashboards or automations.

Before you start

  • A FitnessSyncer account with your sources connected. The MCP Server is included with every account; see Getting Started if you are new.
  • Home Assistant with Assist set up to use an AI conversation agent, such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google Gemini or a local model through Ollama. The FitnessSyncer MCP Server offers many tools, and a larger model chooses between them more reliably than a small local one.
  • The My Home Assistant integration, which is part of the default configuration. Signing in to FitnessSyncer returns to your Home Assistant through it.

Step 1: Create your keys on FitnessSyncer

  1. Go to the Developer Accounts page.
  2. At the bottom of the page, select Home Assistant from the list and click “Create”.
  3. Note the Client Id and Client Secret. The Client Secret is only displayed this once; if you lose it, you can regenerate it, but you will then need to enter it in Home Assistant again.

Step 2: Add FitnessSyncer to Home Assistant

  1. In Home Assistant, go to Settings, then Devices & services.
  2. Select “Add Integration” and choose “Model Context Protocol”.
  3. Enter https://www.fitnesssyncer.com/services/mcp for the server URL and submit.
  4. Home Assistant asks for application credentials. Enter FitnessSyncer as the name, and paste the Client ID and Client Secret from Step 1.
  5. You are taken to FitnessSyncer to sign in and approve the permissions Home Assistant asks for. Uncheck anything you do not want Assist to do; for answering questions, the read permissions are enough.
  6. You are returned to Home Assistant, which finishes adding the integration.

Step 3: Let Assist use FitnessSyncer

  1. In Home Assistant, go to Settings, then Devices & services, open your AI integration (such as OpenAI Conversation), and select the gear next to its conversation agent.
  2. Under Control Home Assistant, also select FitnessSyncer, and submit.
  3. Under Settings, then Voice assistants, open the assistant you talk to and set its Conversation agent to that agent.
  4. Your AI provider bills its API separately from any chat subscription. If Assist answers that there are insufficient funds, add credit with your provider; Google Gemini also offers a free tier.

Try it

Ask Assist any of these to check that everything is working:

  • Which apps and devices is FitnessSyncer connected to, and when did each last sync?
  • How did I sleep this week compared to last week?
  • What has my resting heart rate done over the last month?
  • How many steps did I take yesterday, and how does that compare to my goal?

There are many more ideas on the MCP Server page.

Your AI assistant explains your readings using public guidelines; this is not medical advice.

Can FitnessSyncer data appear as sensors on my Home Assistant dashboard?

Not through this integration. It answers questions when you ask Assist, and does not create sensors or history in Home Assistant. If sensors for your steps, sleep or weight would be useful to you, please let us know.

Home Assistant cannot connect to the server. What should I check?

  • The URL must be exactly https://www.fitnesssyncer.com/services/mcp. FitnessSyncer uses the Streamable HTTP transport, not the older SSE one.
  • Home Assistant must be recent enough for its Model Context Protocol integration to support signing in. If it does not ask you for application credentials, update Home Assistant.

After I sign in to FitnessSyncer, I do not get back to Home Assistant. Why?

The sign-in returns through My Home Assistant, which then opens your own Home Assistant. Make sure the My Home Assistant integration is enabled and that you are signing in from a browser that can reach your Home Assistant.

If the Link account page waits and never finishes, check the instance URL shown below it. It starts as http://homeassistant.local:8123, which only works for a Home Assistant found by that name on your network. Select the pencil, enter the address you use to open your Home Assistant, and link again. If Home Assistant then shows an error, the sign-in took too long: remove the unfinished entry and add the integration again.

How do I disconnect Home Assistant?

Remove the integration in Home Assistant, then revoke its permissions in your profile or delete the Home Assistant keys in Developer Configuration.
