FitnessSyncer in Google Health Connect Configuration

Unlike most of our integrations, Google Health Connect requires you to install our free FitnessSyncer for Android app, which, in addition to giving you quick mobile access to your dashboard and stream on the go, will also integrate Google Health Connect with the FitnessSyncer Platform.

Once in FitnessSyncer:

  • Navigate to the Google Health Connect section by tapping on the Google Health Connect card on the first tab (Sync status, or Sources in earlier versions)
  • Select the types of data you wish to read or write from Google Health Connect. As you change these data types, you may be asked to grant permissions to FitnessSyncer to read or write this data. As with our cloud offering, you must accept all requested permissions. See Permissions to verify or remove permissions.
  • We recommend that you enable any checkboxes that may appear after selecting a data type to reading and writing of VO2 Max, Power, Body Fat, Body Water Mass, Bone Mass, Height, Hydration, Heart Rate Variability, Respiratory Rate, and Resting Heart Rate. If you have multiple devices, you will need to do this on each of them.
  • Once the permissions are granted, you can then use the “Sync” button and start synchronizing the data with FitnessSyncer.

To use sources or destinations beyond Google Health Connect, you can use the back button or swipe right to get back to the first tab to add those.

You should note that while FitnessSyncer Pro users have no limits, free users are limited to the number of sources and destinations tasks they have within their account, and each of these switches count towards this.

FitnessSyncer will either sync Google Health Connect when you press the “Sync” button or automatically periodically if you are connected to Wi-Fi. To disable the Standard Syncs or change the requirement for Wi-Fi, open the app’s settings (the account button at the top right in the newest version, or the Settings tab in earlier ones) and select Device Syncs.

To sync Google Health Connect without opening the app, touch and hold the FitnessSyncer icon, where Google Health Connect is near the top, or add the FitnessSyncer tile to Quick Settings, or use an automation app such as Tasker. See Syncing from the Home Screen, Quick Settings, and Automation Apps.

If you are having issues with the standard sync, please ensure that Standard Synchronization is checked and that if you have elected to only sync over Wi-Fi that you are connected to Wi-Fi at the determined sync time. FitnessSyncer Pro users can schedule the periodic syncs by scheduling a Refresh Source Destination Task.

If you are having any issues with FitnessSyncer, please make sure that you are using the latest version of FitnessSyncer and Google Health Connect.

Should you have any feedback or issues regarding the app, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Does FitnessSyncer work with my Wear OS watch?

Yes, through Google Health Connect, so there is nothing to install on the watch. A Wear OS watch, such as a Pixel Watch or a Galaxy Watch, saves what it records in its companion app on your phone, such as Fitbit or Samsung Health, and that app can share it with Google Health Connect. FitnessSyncer for Android then reads it from there like any other data in Health Connect.

In Health Connect, check that your watch’s app is allowed to write the kinds of data you want, such as exercise, steps, heart rate and sleep, and that FitnessSyncer is allowed to read them. For a Galaxy Watch, you can also connect Samsung Health to FitnessSyncer directly.

How do I upgrade from Google Fit to Google Health?

To upgrade your existing Google Fit services to Google Health Connect:

  • Ensure that Google Fit is being imported into Google Health Connect; see Google’s documentation for information
  • Install FitnessSyncer for Android
  • We recommend that you first test Google Health Connect to make sure that it is working for you by adding another source or destination first.
  • After testing, delete all Google Health sources and destinations that were used in testing.
  • On FitnessSyncer.com, edit your Google Fit sources and destinations and change the source or destination from Google Fit to Google Health Connect.
  • In FitnessSyncer, go to the Google Health Connect section by clicking the Google Health Connect icon and accept the permissions that were requested.
  • In the app’s settings (the account button at the top right in the newest version, or the Settings tab in earlier ones), select Device Syncs, enable Standard Synchronizations, and select the check mark.

You are now fully set up!

Note that unlike Google Fit support, Google Health Connect only runs on your phone. If there is a delay in processing, ensure your Battery Settings and phone is available for synchronization.

Can I add filters to Google Health Connect sources or destinations?

Yes, you may add filters to Google Health Connect sources and destinations, either on FitnessSyncer.com or in the app with Set up the filters when you edit the source or destination.

Can I have multiple Google Health Connect accounts?

No, FitnessSyncer is intended to only support one source and one destination for each data type and Google Health Connect account. If you require multiple accounts, please contact us for assistance.

When I select a Data Type and accept the permissions, the checkbox turns off or I experience error messages. Why?

Usually, this is because one or more of the required permissions were not accepted. The dialog that Google Health Connect shows is scrollable and may have more permissions that you must toggle.

You can also check the permissions by:

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app
  2. Select Security & Privacy
  3. Select Privacy Controls
  4. Select Health Connect
  5. Select FitnessSyncer
  6. Enable the required permissions
  7. At the bottom of the list, select “Additional Access”
  8. Ensure that these two permissions are also enabled.

On some phones or Android versions, this may instead be reached by searching your Settings app for “Health Connect” and selecting Health Connect: Permissions Manager, then FitnessSyncer.

If you are still experiencing issues, please contact us.

Why does Route / Map Data behave differently from the other permissions?

Unlike every other Google Health Connect permission, Android does not let apps ask for the Read Route / Map Data permission through the normal permission dialog. A request for it is ignored rather than refused, which is why that switch, alone among them, brings nothing up when you turn it on.

There are two ways to grant it, and FitnessSyncer tells you about both when you enable the switch:

  • One activity at a time. While the Google Health Connect section is open, Health Connect shows its own consent dialog as each activity with route data is synced. Approving it shares that activity’s route only, and you will not be asked about that activity again.
  • Every route at once, which is granted in Health Connect rather than in FitnessSyncer. The Open Health Connect button on that message takes you to Health Connect; select FitnessSyncer, scroll to the bottom and select Additional access, then select Access exercise routes and choose Always allow. It is not on the permission list with the data types, which is why you may have looked for it there and not found it.

If the per-activity dialog is dismissed or declined, Read Route / Map Data is automatically turned back off and you will see a message explaining why. Simply re-enable the checkbox from the Google Health Connect section to be asked again on your next sync.

Either way, routes are only read while FitnessSyncer is on the screen. Android does not share an activity’s route with an app that is running in the background, even one that has been given Always allow, so routes are skipped by a scheduled or background sync and are picked up the next time you open the Google Health Connect section and sync from there.

Write Route / Map Data is not affected by any of this and is requested through the normal Google Health Connect permission dialog like every other permission.

Only data from when I connected is syncing; where is the rest?

Health Connect asks twice. After the data types, it shows an Allow additional access screen with two switches: Access past data, and Access data in the background. (Access exercise routes sits on the same screen and is the subject of the previous question.) If Access past data was left off, Health Connect hides everything recorded before that day from FitnessSyncer, and we cannot tell that apart from your simply not having older data, which is why nothing warns you.

To give us the full history:

  • Open Health Connect on your phone
  • Select App permissions, then FitnessSyncer
  • Turn on Access past data, and turn on Access data in the background so that we can sync without the app open

Then edit your Google Health Connect sources, use the Reset button, and sync again. A Reset makes us read the whole history rather than carrying on from the last day we saw, which is what brings the older data in.

My Google Health only shows 90 days of data; can I get more?

You can do a Historic Sync and get all of your data with a Pro Account by editing your Google Health source and selecting from the toolbar.
